When I found my old iPod, I knew I had something special. All the music from the time I lived in Lisbon was magically hidden in this tiny box. The last time I listened to this playlist had to be ten years ago. I miraculously found the iPod’s charger cord, plugged in my headphones, and turned the Time Machine to Lisbon, 2008.
Music has such a powerful way of evoking emotion. I have heard that singing and chanting is one of the quickest ways to change your state. When we hum, chant, or sing, we are moving our bodies from the inside. Somehow it seems like we’re moving emotion too.
Would I be able to access all the songs and the emotions they would evoke?
Listening to the songs brought up all kinds of feelings. Right away, I knew this would be helpful!
I took the iPod with me to Lisbon last May. I walked the city with my 2008 playlist. Riding the tram with Modest Mouse, mounting a daunting set of steps with Mark Ronson, taking in a view with Feist…the music gave me the emotional connection I needed for my book.
